What is a Bar Graph?

In mathematics, there are various types of graphs like bar graphs, line graphs, and so on. The bar graph, also known as bar chart, is a type of graph which is used to express or represent data using the help of rectangular bars. The rectangle bars are used to signify the upper limits or heights of the data. A rectangle is a type of geometric shape which is a closed figure made up of four sides. These bars can be both vertical and horizontal. Horizontal signifies left to right and vice-versa whereas vertical means top to bottom and bottom to top. A bar graph is also known as a bar chart because it represents the data in a pictorial format. It has two lines or an axis, the x-axis and the y-axis. The coordinates i.e. x and y contain titles, labels, and the range of scale. There are various uses of the bar graph in our everyday life. Some of them are to determine the growth of a company, to study patterns over a while, and so on. In this article, we shall cover some basic topics regarding bar graphs such as properties of bar graphs, uses and types of a bar graph.

Line Graph

A type of graph which is used to determine or display change over a period of time can be defined as a line graph. The line graph is also known as the line charts as they express or represent the quantitative data. A line graph includes both horizontal and vertical lines. The vertical line is also known as the y-axis and the horizontal lines as the x-axis. The y-axis represents the change in the frequency and the x-axis represents the change over some time. For example, the sales of mobiles are as follows: 150 in January, 300 in February, 800 in March. If you want to plot a line graph, the number of mobiles should be written on the y-axis or vertical line and the months on the x-axis or horizontal line. The line graphs are usually plotted with the help of straight lines. Those lines which have no curve and width are considered straight lines. It is widely used for several things. Some of the uses are, to represent change over a period, used to highlight the anomalies and many more.

Different Types of Bar Graph

As mentioned above, a type of graph which is used to express or represent data using the help of rectangular bars can be defined as a bar graph. There are various types of bar graphs such as vertical, horizontal, grouped, and so on. The following points mentioned below analyze the types of bar graphs in a detailed manner:

  • A type of bar graph that is used to express data vertically using rectangular bars can be defined as a vertical bar graph. The x-axis is drawn vertically to show the rectangular bars whereas the y-axis represents the height of the data.
  • A type of bar graph that is used to express data horizontally using rectangular bars can be defined as a horizontal bar graph. The y-axis is drawn horizontally to represent the bars and the x-axis expresses the height of data.
  • A bar graph that divides the data into various parts can be defined as a stacked graph. It is also known as the composite bar graph. It can be drawn in two ways, vertical or horizontal. The unique fact is that it required special labeling for the data.
  • The discretion of values into two or more categorical data can be done with the help of a grouped bar graph. It is also known as the clustered bar graph. This graph can also be shown in two ways: horizontal and vertical.
